Copyrights Commission Warns Against Music Piracy

The Nigeria Copyright Commission (NCC) is calling on all commercial users of music to obtain proper licenses to ensure creators are fairly compensated, contributing to a sustainable music industry.

The NCC stated this in a press release in commemoration of World Intellectual Property Day over the weekend. While lauding the global impact Nigerian artistes are making around the world, NCC acknowledges low royalties still earned by Nigerian artistes, a problem heightened by digital piracy.

The commission has revised its collective management regulations to promote transparency, accountability in royalty collection and distribution.

It is also cracking down on online music theft by going after people who share music illegally as empowered under the 'Proceeds of Crime' law.

The Copyright Act 2022 empowers the commission to take down websites that host pirated content.

The commission says it plans to collaborate with private sector partners in an anti-piracy campaign to establish transparent standards for digital audits and royalty reporting.
