Brain Drain: Nigerians React to Ehanire's Comments on Shortage of Doctors

Comments made by the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire regarding the availability of doctors in Nigeria continues to be received with heavy criticisms.

The Health Chief at a media conference in Abuja on Tuesday said there were enough medical doctors in the country.

He added that the Federal Government was working towards replacing any medical doctor who resigns and leaves the country.

According to Ehanire, “We have heard complaints of doctors who are now leaving the system but there are actually enough doctors in the system because we are producing up to 2,000 or 3,000 doctors every year in the country, and the number leaving is less than 1,000."

On the Sunny Side, show host Wemimo Adewuni sought to find out the feeling of Nigerians regarding the situation.

She also wanted to sample personal experiences.

"He (Dr. Ehanire) is living in illusion," summated one caller whose aunt died at a government hospital because there were no doctors on duty and the nurses were inexperienced, according to him.

"On Sunday, six of my friends; four nurses and two doctors left to the UK with a job; and I am wondering where are the doctors?

"Where do they get their data from?" he questioned.

For another caller, the answer lies in the time an average Nigerian spends waiting to get attended to on a visit to the hospital.

He explained in details in the video. Click to watch.
