The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) has appealed to the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to find a common ground to prevent disruption in the academic calendar.
The NANS Senate President, Henry Okunomo, pleaded at a press conference in Akure on Sunday 23 June that both sides need to prevent another strike.
“It is with a heavy heart and a determined spirit that I address this pressing issue today, appealing to the government to take immediate and effective steps to prevent our lecturers from resorting to another strike,” Okunomo said.
“We, the students, are the primary stakeholders in this situation. Our voices, hopes, and futures hang in the balance.
“We are counting on the government to act decisively and with a sense of urgency to prevent the devastating impact of another strike.”
ASUU has been in a decades-long dispute with the government over fair wages, working conditions, and university infrastructure.
Disagreements over these issues have led to multiple strikes, including a 33-week strike in 2022.
On Wednesday 19 June, the university lecturers’ union gave the government a three-week ultimatum to meet its demands or risk another walkout.
