ASUU Strike: Latest Talks End in Stalemate

A Tuesday meeting to resolve the issues that have kept undergraduates of federal public universities out of school for six months ended in a stalemate.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the federal government scheduled the meeting to discuss the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement both parties reached.

No new agreement was reached after a three-hour meeting on Tuesday as the negotiation committee appointed by the government reportedly only pleaded with ASUU to suspend its strike, with a pledge that their demands would be included in the 2023 budget.

ASUU began a strike on February 14 after the government failed to meet its demands, including:

  • The release of revitalisation funds for universities, amounting to N1.1 trillion.
  • The renegotiation of a 2009 agreement between both parties.
  • The release of earned allowances for university lecturers.
  • And the deployment of the UTAS payment platform for salaries and allowances of university lecturers.

On Monday, the National President of the ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke said the last demand had been met.
