President Bola Tinubu has intervened in the political crisis in Rivers State by calling a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
An eight-point communique issued after the meeting on Monday directed that all legal suits regarding the crisis be withdrawn immediately while all impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara be dropped.
The meeting was attended by Rivers State former governor Peter Odili; the Rivers APC chairman; the FCT minister Nyesom Wike; the speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly; Governor Fubara; and his deputy.
The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, was also present for the talks.
The meeting also resolved to recognize the leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly as led by Martin Amaewhule who decamped from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Other resolutions included the recognition of the 26 lawmakers, who resigned from the PDP with Amaewhule, as members of the Rivers Assembly.
Their financial entitlements and those of their staff are to be reinstated, and Governor Fubara shall refrain from interfering with the funding of the State Assembly.
Similarly, the Rivers House of Assembly shall choose where it wants to sit and conduct its legislative affairs without hindrance from the state executive while Governor Fubara shall re-present the 2024 budget to the State House of Assembly.
Additionally, the names of all commissioners who resigned their appointments because of the political crisis should be resubmitted to the House of Assembly for approval.
The meeting declared the dissolution of local government administration as null and void and declared that no caretaker committee would be recognized.
