The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Disaster Response Unit (DRU) of the military have commenced aerial surveillance of flood-hit parts of Anambra State.
They are trying to ascertain the number of persons displaced or trapped by the rising flood waters.
The South East zonal coordinator of NEMA, Thickman Tanimu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Monday that it would airlift trapped persons in the affected communities.
“Search and rescue operations commenced today,” he said.
“The military DRU has been engaged and has started ‘Air Recce’ or aerial view to collect image intelligence of the affected communities.
“This will help to ascertain displaced and trapped persons who need to be evacuated to pave the way for airlifting.”
Mr. Tanimu said relief materials will be presented directly to the flood victims on Tuesday.
“The delay in the arrival of the relief materials is due to the flood disaster that cut off the Abuja-Lokoja road and also the security situation due to the Monday sit-at-home in the South East.
“The relief materials will hopefully arrive on Tuesday and be ready for delivery directly to victims.
“These items are meant to complement the efforts of the Anambra State government in providing immediate succour to victims and aid their speedy rehabilitation,” he added.
