Supreme Court Ruling: Labour Party Dismisses Reports of Leadership Change, Reaffirms Abure as Chairman

The Labour Party has dismissed reports suggesting that the Supme Court ruling on Friday removed Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the party.

In a statement signed by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Arabambi Abayomi, the party clarified that the apex court did not pronounce any change in its national leadership structure.

According to the Labour Party, the Supreme Court struck out the appeals brought by Senator Nenadi Usman and others, as well as that of the Abure faction, stating that courts lack the jurisdiction to interfere in internal party leadership matters.

"The Supreme Court ruled that only political parties can determine their leaders and that the courts should not interfere in such internal affairs," the statement read.

The statement further explained that the court ruled that the trial court had no authority to make pronouncements on who leads the Labour Party, adding that political parties must act in accordance with their own constitutions.

Reacting to the implications of the judgment, the party stated: “How does this remove Abure?”

The statement reaffirmed that the Labour Party, following its constitution, held a convention that duly produced Barrister Julius Abure as National Chairman and Alhaji Farouk Umar Ibrahim as National Secretary.

“By implication, and in line with the court’s ruling and the constitution of our party, the only recognised national leadership remains Barrister Julius Abure and Alhaji Farouk Umar Ibrahim,” it added.

The party urged members of the public to disregard false narratives and media misrepresentations regarding the court’s ruling.
