The Lagos Government says no portion of the strategic and ever-busy Lekki-Epe Road would have gone bad if "Lekki Concession Company (LCC)) had continued to do its business on that road."
Those were the words of the state's Information and Strategy Commissioner, Gbenga Omotosho.
"You will agree with me that the road was never in this kind of condition when the toll was being collected there.
"So, what this means is that the money that Lagos State Government ought to have used for some other things, we are now going to use in billions to fix that road all the way from Abraham Adesanya to Lekki and Victoria Island," the commissioner said while answering questions on Nigeria Info's Hard Facts.
According to the Commissioner, the Lagos State Government is rebuilding the Lekki-Epe road from Abraham Adesanya down to Eleko junction, and "work is over 90 percent complete."
“It is very easy for our people to talk about rights and privileges. Roads are bad, this is not good, this is not right but nobody ever thinks about responsibility,” Omotosho added.
“Don't forget that when LCC was maintaining that road and was collecting toll at the Lekki tollgate, there was no pothole on that road.
“But then, we all know what happened and then LCC could no longer collect tolls on that road and the money to maintain the road could not be found.
"So, all of us have a responsibility for that road because it's our property,” the commissioner maintained.
