The United Arab Emirates has opened an embassy in the Israeli coastal city of Tel Aviv

The United Arab Emirates has opened an embassy in the Israeli coastal city of Tel Aviv as part of a deal agreed last year to normalise diplomatic relations between both countries.

Israeli President, Isaac Herzog, called the opening “an important milestone for the entire Middle East” as he stood alongside Emirati ambassador, Mohamed al-Khaja, for the inaugural ceremony.

This makes the UAE and Bahrain the first Gulf countries to establish official ties with Israel, crossing a decades-old line drawn by most Arab states.

Sudan and Morocco have also inked U.S.-brokered deals to form diplomatic ties with Israel in recent months.
