Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has officially resigned his membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

In a statement released on Monday, El-Rufai cited disappointment with the APC's leadership, accusing the party of deviating from the progressive ideals on which it was founded.

“At this point in my political journey, I have come to the conclusion that I must seek another political platform for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish. I have now decided to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP),” he announced on X (formerly Twitter).

El-Rufai revealed that for the past two years, he had privately and publicly expressed concerns about the party’s direction but saw no willingness from the leadership to address these issues.

"The APC has castrated its organs and treated its membership with contempt in the last two years. I find this no longer acceptable," he stated.

The former governor, who served eight years in Kaduna, said his administration was committed to progressive policies for human development, a vision he claims is no longer reflected in the APC.
