Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, of Lagos State on Wednesday, announced a “total ban” on commercial motorcycle ‘okada’ operations in six local governments of the state.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, gave the directive during a meeting with the state’s security agents.
Local government areas affected by the ban include Ikeja, Surulere, Eti Osa, Lagos Mainland, Lagos Island and Apapa.
However, this will not be the first time the current administration imposes a ban on Okadas.
In January 2020, Governor Sanwo-Olu prohibited the operation of motorcycles and Keke bikes in six local government areas, nine local council development areas and 10 major highways across the state effective February 1, 2020. ‘
Enforcement, however, was short-lived as many motorcycles and tricycles returned to the previously restricted areas, particularly highways, as the demand for them grew.
But following another ban, will Lagos get it right this time?
Jimi Disu, a Public Affairs analyst, does not think so. During an interview with Sheriff Quadry on the Morning Crossfire, he questioned the ability of the present administration to enforce the ban on Okadas given how they have grown in numbers in the last few years.
In spite of this, he stated Lagosians cannot continue to live this way due to Okadas' threats to security.
On his part, Quadry pointed out that the governor in his announcement had mentioned the soon to be available trains and last mile buses as a possible replacement for Okada. The governor's claim, given the limited resources, didn't ring true.
Disu agrees, noting that the rail lines do not cover many routes. He also mentioned the traffic situation that has given okadas, the environment to thrive.
