Why Recurring Fires At Lagos Markets?

You are viewing content from Nigeria Info, Let's Talk! Lagos. Would you like to make this your preferred location?

If there is one thing Lagos is known for and easily identified with, it is its big and renowned markets.

From Oyingbo to Aswani, Idumota to Yaba, Mushin and of course Balogun, the Centre of Excellence has an abundance of locations for trading.

However, another fire at a Lagos market has resurrected inquests into the the reason for a now recurring trend, especially in the state.

A four-storey market building on Martins Street at the famous Balogun Market in Lagos was gutted by fire on Sunday, destroying clothing materials stored in one of the shops according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

It is not the first time Balogun Market will be raised by fire. There were outbreaks in the same market in November 2019, 2020, and 2021.

To that end, Whaats Up Lagos show hosts Mary-Ann Duke Okon and Stretch sought to know why this is now a regularity.

They were equally interested in knowing the reason(s) for the fires and how the trend can be bucked.

The timing of the fire; is there a pattern to it? They inquired.

One caller thought "negligence" was the bane of the problem, while another reckoned it is simply "diabolical".

Watch their summation in the video.
