Concerns have been raised by residents of Rivers State about the effective working relationship between the resigned Rivers commissioners and Governor Siminalayi Fubara, given their loyalty choices.
This comes as the commissioners, who are loyal to the FCT Minister and former state governor, Nyesom Wike, are now being reconsidered for screening by the state House of Assembly.
Solomon Lenu, spokesperson for the Rivers Civil Society Organization, asserts that recalling these commissioners, who voluntarily resigned citing personal reasons, constitutes an imposition on the Fubara-led administration.
Lenu, during an interview on Nigeria Info FM’s Morning Crossfire, also urged individuals and leaders to prioritize the state's interest over personal concerns.
"If these commissioners were to prioritize the state's interest, they wouldn't come back," he said, emphasizing that their reappointment is not in the state's best interest.
Lenu also expressed concern about the legitimacy of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, to invite the commissioners for screening. This concern follows the defection of 27 House members, including the Speaker, from the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, resulting in the vacant status of their seats according to the law.
A caller during Morning Crossfire also suggested that the commissioners should decline the offer, citing their allegiance to the FCT Minister, which could hinder their cordial working relationship with the state governor.
