Nigerians speak out on turning down job offers

There are several reasons why Nigerians choose to walk away from job offers. From the undervaluing of skills to family priorities and the need for creative freedom, the decision to say "no" can be complex and deeply personal.

In a recent conversation on Nigeria Info's Sunny Side, the question posed was: Beyond a salary package that is not befitting, why would you turn down a job offer?

Callers shared diverse experiences and compelling reasons for rejecting seemingly good opportunities.

Perez would not hesitate to decline an offer that disrespected his talent. Being paid less than his worth and seeing a colleague with a "questionable degree" earning more? That is a recipe for a quick "no thanks." For him, it is about recognising his skillset and refusing to be short-changed.

Sofia's story resonates with many. For her, family comes first. She recently turned down a job due to the distance from her family. Leaving her husband and children behind for a ‘meagre amount’ just was not worth it.

Noble's experience highlights the importance of personal fulfillment beyond the paycheck. He shares how a high-paying job that stifled his creative independence ‘ate him up every day’. For him, a job that suffocates creative independence is a dealbreaker.
