Some Nigerians continue to debate the nation's readiness for a state policing system as a solution to the escalating insecurity in various parts of the country. This debate intensifies as calls for state governments to take full control of policing within their states resurface nationwide, with stakeholders divided in their opinions.
Offering his perspective on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, Assistant Inspector General of Police, Abutu Yaro argues that state governments are ill-prepared to manage state police forces within their states.
AIG Yaro asserted that the security concerns raised by governors contradict their true intentions, alleging that they seek to intimidate political opponents and citizens.
He explained that State Commissioners of Police are assigned based on the inputs of the governors. He also noted the substantial contributions governors already make to the police concerning logistics, as well as their authority to issue directives to the State Commissioners of Police.
"What else do they want?" he queried.
According to him, implementing a state police system in the country would probably lead to its abuse by state governors.
