Environmentalist, Fyne Face Dumnamene has condemned recent airstrike operations by the Nigerian Air Force, NAF in parts of Rivers State.
The Nigerian Air Force had on August 11, 2023, carried out air raids on illegal refining sites in the riverine areas between Bonny Island and South of Port Harcourt as well as the South-West of Bille in Degema local government area, destroying boats allegedly stealing crude in the State.
Speaking in an interview on NigeriaInfo's MorningCrossfire, Dumnamene bemoaned the negative impact of these airstrikes on the environment.
He expressed shock that airstrikes were deployed in the Niger Delta region to prevent crude oil theft even after the federal government engaged a private security outfit, Tantita Security Service Nigeria Limited led by ex- agitator, Ekpemukpolo Government popularly known as Tompolo to tackle this challenge.
Speaking on why this challenge has lingered despite attempts by the government to nip it in, Dumnamene faulted Tantita's recruitment process, alleging that unemployed friends and family members of those in charge of recruiting were engaged instead of the youths originally involved in illegal refining activities.
He also claimed that Tantita employees have not been paid in four months.
Dumnamene therefore urged the federal government to review existing measures put in place to combat illegal oil refining including the establishment of modular refineries. He also wants the government to provide an alternative source of livelihood for illegal refiners as this will deter the youth from continuing such acts.
He also suggested robust communication links between Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea on organised crime.
The environmental advocate further called for the legalisation of artisanal refining as well as sanctions for security personnel involved in illegal refining activities.
