A caller who identified as an e-hailing driver has blamed the police for the recent attacks on e-hailing cab drivers in Port Harcourt.

“On the driver's app, you will see a spot where there is SOS, and when you hit the SOS button it takes you to the local security, which happens to be the police but the problem is that the police don’t respond,” he said, on Nigeria Info’s Hello Port Harcourt while narrating a recent experience with his passengers.

Speaking further on ways e-hailing cab drivers can avoid robbery attacks, he advised drivers to stay on the route to the destination displayed on the map of the e-hailing app instead of following alternative route suggestions by riders. He also urged e-hailing drivers to install car trackers to ensure the safety of their vehicles and a possible retrieval after theft.

Another caller, who also identified as an e-hailing driver says robbery attacks on drivers can be prevented. He called on e-hailing companies to profile riders who use the e-hailing service at the point of booking. He suggested the inclusion of the National Identity Number, NIN in the profiling of riders to facilitate tracking in a case of robbery.

There is been a recent series of violent attacks on e-hailing cab drivers in Port Harcourt. The Chairman, E-hailing Drivers Association, Goodluck Iheanacho, says more than five E-hailing drivers were killed in the past week.
