Chinese President Xi Jinping, 69, has been re-elected to an unprecedented third term as president by the Communist Party.

The re-election comes as no surprise, given that Xi is widely considered to be the most dominant leader China has seen in decades, rivalling even the iconic Mao Zedong in stature.

On Friday, the Great Hall of the People witnessed the choreographed event during the ongoing session of China's National People's Congress. In a unanimous vote, Xi received 2,952 votes, with no other candidates in the running.

Along with his presidency, Xi was also endorsed as chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC).

Chinese leaders were limited to two terms since Mao held the title of Chairman, but the Communist Party of China amended its Constitution in March 2018, paving the way for Xi to remain in office for life.

His re-election solidifies his position as China's most powerful leader in decades, with a level of control that rivals even that of Mao Zedong.
