Turbaning of Bandit: Statesmanship or Negative Peace?

Reactions continue to trail the news of the Zamfara State Government's suspension of the Emir of Birnin 'Yandoto of Tsafe Local Government Area.

Aliyu Marafa was suspended on Sunday 17 July for conferring a traditional title of the Sarkin Fulani (Chief of Fulani) of Yandoto Emirate on a bandit leader, Ado Aleru.

While the suspension has largely been criticized, the decision to turban the bandit kingpin in the first place has come under even more flak.

But has response to the events in Zamfara state been more reactionary than radical?

On the Sunny Side, Joyce Onyemuwa probed the sentiments behind both decisions.

Could the move to turban Aleru be for the greater good of the community in the interim, or is the long-term safety of the same community in more doubt?

"The Emir is psychologically gambling with the emotion of the Zamfara people, he should be grilled and asked questions," one caller retorted.

He added, "Where were the Nigerian soldiers when this chieftaincy title was been conferred on this bandit leader?"

Another caller however saw things differently.

For him, the decision by the state government to suspend the Emir may not have been well thought up, just like the idea of turbaning the bandit.

He explained extensively in the video below.
