The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Lagos State, Comrade Ismail Adejumo has disclosed that the minimum wage strike will continue pending when the negotiations with the government are concluded.

On Tuesday, he stated on Nigeria Info 99.3 FM’s Morning Crossfire that the NLC’s National Executive Committee will convene Tuesday morning to examine and evaluate the outcome of Monday night’s meeting and decide what to do.

On Monday night, the presidents of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress met with the government in Abuja after the labor unions shut down critical infrastructure, including the national grid.

At the meeting, organized labor and the government agreed to negotiate every day this week. The government also agreed to pay ‘above’ the N60,000 it proposed last week as the national minimum wage.

Comrade Adejumo said the unions will meet today (Tuesday) to decide whether to suspend the strike as the talks go on.

“By 9 am this morning there will be a joint meeting of NLC and TUC to analyze and take a position on the proposal put forward by the government,” he said on Morning Crossfire.

Adejumo stated that a living wage was the only way to move forward and that all workers will return to work as soon as this is accomplished.

He said the strike, which started on Monday, has “loudly and clearly” signaled that Nigerian workers' collective resolve should never be underestimated.
