Terrorists have attacked the Kuje Correctional Centre, a medium-security prison, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The attack began at about 10 pm Tuesday and lasted for more than two hours, according to people who live around the centre.

Bombs were detonated and shots were fired repeatedly.

It is suspected the attackers are members of Boko Haram trying to free some leaders of the terrorist group held at the custodial centre.

Security agencies arrived later in the night and engaged in a gunbattle with the terrorists.

Calm was restored before dawn according to the Service Public Relations Officer (SPRO), Abubakar Umar.

Men of the Armed Squad of the NCoS (Nigerian Correctional Service) and other security agencies attached to the custodial centre have responded.

“Calm has been restored to the facility and the situation is under control. Details will be made available soon,” he said.
