The Senate has mandated its committees on Petroleum Upstream, Downstream, Gas, Niger Delta Affairs, Health and Environment, to investigate the recent gas pipeline explosion in Bayelsa State.
The lawmakers resolved this on Wednesday after a debate on a motion sponsored by Senator Benson Konbowei.
In his lead debate, the senator, who represents Bayelsa Central, said the explosion in Yenagoa Local Government Area caused widespread panic among residents.
Contributing to the debate, Senators Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa West) and Eteng Williams (Cross River Central) called for urgent measures to prevent any recurrence.
In his ruling, the President of the Senate, Godswil Akpabio, described the explosion and consequent inferno and pollution of the environment as worrisome.
He urged the federal government to provide support to victims.
