The Senate has raised an alarm over the importation of substandard petrol and diesel into the Nigerian market.

The lawmakers directed the Senate’s relevant committees to investigate the reports after Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong raised a motion at plenary on Wednesday.

Senator Ekpeyong said the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has been issuing import licenses for diesel and jet, despite sufficient local production capacity.

After that, other lawmakers expressed anger over what they described as sabotage and a clear failure of the objectives of the Petroleum Industry Act.

Senators Adams Oshomole, Solomon Olamilekan, and Abdul Ningi insisted that anyone indicted should be prosecuted.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, corroborated his colleagues’ views.

The probe panel, chaired by the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele was given three weeks to report back to the Senate in plenary for further legislative input.
