The Kano state government has imposed a dawn-to-dusk curfew to prevent the breakdown of order following rising tensions from the collation of the results of Saturday’s governorship and state assembly elections.

The state commissioner for information and internal affairs, Muhammad Garba, announced this in a statement on Monday morning.

The decision was to prevent hoodlums from causing chaos as the situation in Kano had been tense over the last 24 hours.

The commissioner asked residents to stay indoors as security agents would not spare anyone or any group that causes trouble.

The New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) candidate, Abba Kabiru Yusuf, was declared the winner of the governorship election in the state on Monday morning.

The State Collation Officer, Prof. Ahmad Doko said Yusuf won the vote in 30 of Kano’s 44 local government areas, polling 1,019,602 votes in the process.

His closest rival, Nasir Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) got 890,705 votes.
