A fire broke out on Thursday at the North-West University’s City Campus in Kano, engulfing the ninth floor of the building.

The inferno affected the offices of the Head of Department (HOD) and lecturers in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department.

A security guard trained in firefighting was rushed to the university clinic after inhaling smoke.

The Kano State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service, responded swiftly to quench the fire.

Confirming the incident to our correspondent, Sani Anas, Director of the State Fire Service, “attributed it to an electric spark.”

Anas said firefighters managed to contain the flames before they could spread to other parts of the building.

Vice-Chancellor Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa stated that while the fire had been extinguished, the full extent of the damage remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.

“We cannot ascertain the total loss at this moment, but we are grateful that no lives were lost,” he said.

Kurawa added that the university enforces a policy requiring all electrical appliances to be turned off before staff and students leave, aiming to enhance safety, conserve energy, and reduce costs.

“Routine inspections are conducted to ensure compliance across all departments,” he added.
