Organised labour has agreed to attend a ”negotiation” meeting of the Tripartite Committee on the Minimum Wage slated for Tuesday.

The vice president of the Trade Union Congress, Etim Okon, confirmed this at an interview in Abuja on Monday.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the TUC walked out on an initial negotiation meeting in April after the federal government proposed N48,000 as the new minimum wage for workers in the country.

The unions are demanding N615,000 as the minimum wage, a 2,000 percent increase from the current N30,000 base pay.

“The proposal falls significantly short of meeting our needs and aspirations,” the unions said.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) says the government has not supplied any verified facts to back up its offer, accusing Abuja of damaging the bargaining process's credibility by its lack of openness and good faith.

”The federal government has apologized and the next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday and we are going to appear and present our demand,” Okon said on Monday.

“We will still be presenting the N615,000. It is what we presented before we walked out, though our submission was not rejected by the government.

“We only rejected the N48,000 that government presented. Because they did not show us how they arrived at that amount.”
