The Rivers State governor, Siminalaye Fubara, has described the impeachment proceedings against him at the state House of Assembly as null and void.
The governor stated this Monday morning when he visited the Assembly complex that was torched Sunday night.
The governor condemned the burning of the Assembly complex while condemning the reported sitting of some of the lawmakers.
“I heard some people gathered here to do whatever. That is purely rubbish. Purely rubbish!” he said.
“You cannot sit when there is a problem and say you are doing anything. What are you doing? I am the Chief Security Officer. I am the head of the government.
“I am the person who should come, declare the place, and create an alternative place for the Assembly to sit. So, whatever action that was taken here is null and void.”
Surrounded by scores of his supporters later at the Rivers State Government House, the governor demanded reasons for the impeachment proceedings against him while accusing security agencies of compromise.

The governor is believed to be in a battle of political supremacy with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
Wike, who is the current minister of the Federal Capital Territory, was instrumental to Fubara’s emergence, but they are believed to have fallen out over unconfirmed reasons.
Earlier on Monday morning, the Rivers State House of Assembly held a plenary at the auditorium of the burned Assembly complex and started impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara.
The impeachment notice was read by the member representing Omuma State Constituency, Sylvanus Nwankwo, in which the governor was accused of "acts of gross misconduct."
The speaker of the House, Martins Amaehule, later asked the clerk to forward the notice to Governor Fubrara.
The speaker accused the Government House and the House leader, Edison Ehie, of involvement in the fire that engulfed the Assembly complex.
Honorable Ehie was subsequently removed and some other lawmakers were suspended.
The speaker is believed to be loyal to Nyesom Wike while Ehie is a Fubara ally.
