The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has rejected the Niger junta's proposal for a three-year transition of power to a democratic government.
ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, voiced the bloc's refusal to accept this proposal during a live appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
Musah described the offer as "completely unacceptable" and emphasized ECOWAS' stance to restore constitutional order to Niger.
He said a lengthy transition period was unnecessary and expressed concerns that the timeline could be a deliberate strategy to mislead ECOWAS and facilitate actions not in line with democratic principles.
Musah referred to similar situations in other West African countries under military regimes, where initial transition timelines were extended.
The head of Niger’s military junta, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, had outlined this plan in a televised address, stating that the military did not plan on holding on to power permanently.
