The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Ibrahim Muhammad Tanko has resigned.
No document has been made official, but the CJN's Special Assistant on Media, Ahuraka Isah confirmed the resignation to journalists covering the Supreme Court.
He resigned on health grounds but some media are reporting he was forced to step down.
Plans are underway to appoint the next-highest ranking justice of the Supreme Court, Olukayode Ariwoola as the interim Chief Justice of Nigeria.
Justice Muhammad’s resignation is coming a week after 14 justices of the court accused him of abandoning his responsibilities and going on unnecessary foreign trips.
They also accused the CJN of denying them quality accommodation, vehicles, and internet services.
He was sworn in as Nigeria's Chief Justice in January 2019 following the suspension and later sacking of the former CJN, Walter Onnoghen.
