Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State is advocating for state police to address insecurity in Nigeria.
He made the call when he met with People’s Democratic Party (PDP) delegates in Taraba State.
“You cannot stop insecurity if we don’t have state police. There are no two ways about it. Having state police does not mean they won’t have federal police. All over in the federal system, if each council has its police, you employ people who know the environment. You can’t take a stranger to go to Jos. It will take him years to understand the place,” he said.
“If a federal offense is committed, the federal police will handle it. If a state offense is committed, the state should handle it. So, one key thing to stop insecurity is to have state police. Those who are against it, I do not know why.”
Governor Wike also assured the delegates that he will continue to work for the interest of the PDP even if he does not get the party’s presidential ticket.
“Let me state clearly. Yes, I pray I will win, but peradventure I don’t win, I’m going to work hard for this party. It is not about me, it’s about the party.
“We have suffered and we must come and tell ourselves the simple truth.
“If people want to win elections in 2023, there must be individuals you must look at and say if we go with this person, there’s a likelihood that we will win and if we go with this person, we will win, no likelihood.
“With me, PDP will win election.
“What this country revers today is a leader that is courageous. A leader that has the capacity and a leader that is committed to the party and the nation,” he told the delegates.
Governor is one of many presidential aspirants trying to woo delegates ahead of the PDP’s special convention for presidential primary on 28 May.
