It was Nigeria's Independence Day weekend as the country turned 63 on Sunday.

The day kicked off with a national broadcast by President Bola Tinubu. He announced a provisional salary increase of N25,000 for the lowest-paid federal government workers. 

The money was to be paid every month over six months but labor unions would have none of it. The unions told the government about their position at a meeting that took place Sunday evening between government representatives and union leaders.

At the end of the talks, the government agreed to increase the monthly salaries of all federal government workers by N35,000.
