A bill seeking to provide for the documentation and protection of domestic workers and employers of domestic workers across the country has passed second reading in the Senate.
The lead debate was presented by the bill’s sponsor, Senator Hussaini Babangida, at Wednesday's plenary.
In his presentation, Senator Babangida noted that most domestic workers in Nigeria were either unregistered or unengaged in violation of labor laws.
The Jigawa North-West Senator also noted that the country did not have a codified set of laws to cater to various cadres of domestic workers, some of whom are non-Nigerians.
Senators Simon Lalong, Idiat Adebule, and Sani Musa, who spoke in favor of the bill’s passage, said the piece of legislation was timely considering the spate of abuse on domestic workers.
The proposed legislation does not only seek to protect domestic workers but aims to protect their employers.
In his ruling, the President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Labour and Productivity giving four weeks to report back in plenary for further legislative input.
