The National Council of State meeting is taking place Thursday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja with President Muhammadu Buhari presiding.
It is the highest body vested with the task of advising the executive on policy matters.
The meeting started at 10 am, with a minute silence in honor of the former head of interim government, Chief Ernest Shonekan who died at the age of 85 on 11 January.
Security and socio-economic issues are expected to dominate discussions.
Former Nigerian leaders at the meeting are Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar (rtd), and President Goodluck Jonathan. Other former leaders are attending virtually.
Also attending is Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, as well as the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, and the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibarahim Gambari.
Governors Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Hope Uzodinma (Imo), Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), Bello Matawalle (Zamfara), Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), and others are physically present.
