The Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners is appealing to the state government to pay an initially agreed N15,000 wage award for pensioners to cushion the hardship in the country.
The Kano State Government had agreed to pay pensioners a N15,000 wage award for three months but reneged to N5,000 for a period of two months, a move that worried the ex-workers.
In an interview with Nigeria Info on Thursday, NUP Kano’s spokesperson, Badamasi Usman acknowledged the vulnerability of pensioners, pointing out that they are yet to even get the reduced wage award of N5,000.
He further appealed that the state government pay the earlier promised N15,000 following the removal of the petrol subsidy and eventual inflation in the country.
Meanwhile, pensioners in Kano State lauded the current administration for the prompt payment of their monthly pension, adding that no pensioner earns below N5,000 a month.
Reports emanating from the Southern part of the country had indicated that pensioners earned below N1,500 to N3,000 monthly with some state governors owing backlogs of these funds.
But, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Kano, Badamasi Umar says their condition is fairer compared to the past administration.
