The Supreme Court has set December 15 as the date for delivering its judgement on the appeal seeking the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from detention.
Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun led five-member panel, set the date after the legal representatives for both the Federal Government and Nnamdi Kanu presented their final arguments.
Kanu's legal team, led by Kanu Agabi, appealed to the court not only for the immediate release of their client but also for the imposition of substantial punitive costs on the Federal Government.
Counsel to the Federal Government, Tijani Gazzali, urged the Supreme Court to uphold the amended argument filed on May 3, 2023.
He requested the court to support the government's appeal, overturn the Court of Appeal's decision ordering Kanu's release, and restart his trial on terrorism-related charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Recall that on October 13, 2022, the Court of Appeal in Abuja ruled in favour of Kanu's release and dismissed the 15-count terrorism charges filed by the Federal Government against him.
The Court of Appeal found that the government violated established laws by forcibly extraditing Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria for trial.
Not convinced with the ruling, the Federal Government escalated the matter to the Supreme Court and succeeded in obtaining a suspension of the judgement's execution until the government's appeal is resolved.
