NCC Restores Voice and Data Services

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says that voice and data services, previously impacted by undersea cable cuts, have now been restored.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the NCC Director of Public Affairs, Rueben Muoka.

He announced that most services have been fixed after the disruptions on March 14, 2024. 
He stated that the disruptions were caused by cuts in undersea fiber optics.

NCC identified fishing activities, anchoring near shore in shallow waters, natural events like earthquakes and landslides, and equipment failures as the causes of the cut.

Recall that telecommunications subscribers and bank users were thrown into despair last week when network operations took a nose dive, leaving digital transactions and internet communications paralyzed along the coast of West Africa 

Mobile network operators like MTN and various banks attributed the network outage to this undersea cable cut. 

MainOne, the submarine cable company responsible, had earlier estimated that repairs to the cable might take up to two weeks. 

However, in a positive turn of events the disruptions have been contained in much less time.

Muoka mentioned that about 90% of the services are back to normal. 

He further explained that the affected operators have used other submarine cables to recover most of their capacity. 

Mobile Network Operators have also assured the commission that data and voice services will continue to work well until the undersea cables are fully repaired, thanks to alternative connections that have now been set up.

NCC expressed gratitude to consumers for their patience and understanding during the downtime caused by the undersea fiber cuts.
