The Kano State government has announced plans for a commission for persons with disabilities.
The state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and the Disabled, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi Sani, disclosed this on Monday while reacting to the challenges that hinder disabled persons from fully participating in society.
Hannatu Suleiman Abba, from the Voluntary People Support Development Initiative, had earlier raised concerns that more than 43,000 persons with special needs in the State have “limited access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities that continue to marginalize them."
Other selected Civil Society Organization (CSO) representatives advocated for the full implementation of the Child Protection Law to bring perpetrators of child rights abusers like rapists to justice.
Hajiya Amina said the Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, was aware of their plight, adding that the governor was “working to ensure the establishment of the commission."
According to the commissioner, the Disability Commission would play a vital role in addressing the issues relating to “limited access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities."
Hajiya Aminu further assured residents of Kano State that the Child Protection Law would soon be domesticated in the state and restated the commitment of the Yusuf-led administration to halting all forms of violence against women and children.
On his part, the Technical Adviser to Governor Abba Yusuf on Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba, said the state's 2025 "Budget of Hope, Human Capital, and Economic Development” provides provisions for the establishment of social protection policies for all in Kano State.
