The Kano State Police Command has confirmed that the Tuesday morning blast which rocked the Sabon Gari area was caused by a gas cylinder explosion.
The 9 am blast was initially thought to have been a bomb.
It brought down the building where the gas cylinder shop was located and destroyed the roof of the nearby Winners School.
At least four persons have been confirmed dead and many more are trapped in the rubble of the collapsed building.
A yet-to-be-verified number of persons, some of whom are pupils of Winners School, are injured.
Rescue efforts are ongoing with a combined team of regular police officers, the anti-bomb squad, firefighters, and emergency responders at the scene.
