Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory generated N1.93 trillion in internal revenue in 2022.
Data released on Monday by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) puts Lagos, Rivers, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) ahead of the pack with N651.15 billion, N172.89 billion, and N124.4 billion.
Kebbi (N9.1 billion), Taraba (N10.2 billion), and Yobe (N10.5 billion) generated the lowest revenue.
The tax sub-categories recorded in the period included Pay as You Earn (PAYE), direct assessment, road taxes, stamp duties, capital gains tax, withholding taxes, other taxes, and Local Government Area (LGA) revenue.
PAYE emerged as the most significant revenue source during the year, contributing 67.62 percent to the total tax revenue generated nationwide, while capital gains tax had the smallest share at 0.24 percent of the total tax revenue.
Regarding Local Government Areas revenue, Oyo, Lagos, and Jigawa states were the top three states, reporting N11.83 billion, N11.51 billion, and N8.70 billion, respectively, for the year.
