Former Prime Minister and AC Milan owner, Silvio Berlusconi, has died aged 86.

Berlusconi, who was prime minister during 1994-5, 2001-6 and 2008-11, had been suffering from leukaemia and had recently developed a lung infection.

He had suffered over the years from heart ailments and prostate cancer and was also taken to hospital after a COVID-19 infection in 2020.

According to Italian media, he died at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan.

In 2017, Berlusconi sold AC Milan and acquired Monza one year later with the intention of bringing the club into the top tier, and last year Monza were promoted to Italian Serie A for the first time in their history.

In at least seven cases, Mr Berlusconi was convicted on serious charges such as bribing a senator and paying off judges, which plagued him throughout his political career.

Although Mr Berlusconi's Forza Italia party is part of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's right-wing coalition, his death is likely to disrupt Italian politics for some time.
