The Group President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwunmi Adesina, says the continent is losing about seven to $15 billion annually to the ravages of climate change.

Adesina made this statement at a press conference in Nairobi on Tuesday alongside the ongoing AfDB Annual Meetings 2024.

Although Africa made only a small fraction of the world's emissions, the continent was disproportionately affected by environmental disasters, he said.

The region is also surprisingly bearing the brunt of environmental disruption despite contributing only three to four percent of emissions.

Dr. Adesina added that the situation could worsen, with annual climate change losses in Africa potentially reaching $40 billion by 2030, unless prompt action is taken.

The AfDB boss emphasized the need for comprehensive action beyond mere acknowledgment and international financial support to enhance Africa's resilience and aid in adaptation measures.
