BBG/VOA Trains Nigerian Radio Affiliates On Investigative Reporting

Imagine a world without Investigative journalism, this form of journalism involves deeply investigating a single topic of interest ranging from socio-cultural matters, economic issues and political concerns. It is aimed at identifying the violation of laws and norms because it is a tool of reforms and development. It also provides checks and balance regarding government activities.

As part of the initiative to create an enabling environment for investigative journalism to thrive, the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) and Voice of America organised a 3-Day training in Lagos from 31st October to 3rd November on “Investigative Reporting” for Nigerian Radio Affiliates. It featured participants across different radio and TV stations including Cool FM, Wazobia FM, Nigeria Info FM and Wazobia TV.

The training was coordinated by Mr Cyril Oleh and facilitated by veteran journalist Mr Anselm Okolo (Journalism.com Centre). It highlighted critical aspects of investigative reporting as well as doing a Wow story, key Research Techniques and basic Principles of Writing for Radio and the Small screen.

Participants were all encouraged to tilt their efforts towards Impact stories that challenge the status quo and break away from the usual. The major consensus drawn by everyone at the training is investigative journalism no doubt plays a crucial role in a democratic society. Because it is poised at informing and enlightening both the government and citizenry with constructive criticism.

BBG/VOA further emphasised its commitment to support the Freedom of Information around the world, as more innovative digital resource materials were introduced to the participants and they were all issued certificates at the end of the training.
