The Chairman of the Urban Drivers Welfare Association in Rivers State, Lekia Isaac says the multiplicity of tricycle unions in the state is responsible for the violation of the ban on tricycle operations also known as ‘Keke’ on major roads in Port Harcourt.

Earlier, the Rivers State Government reiterated its 3-year ban on tricycle operations on major highways in Port Harcourt, warning that the state government will soon implement the ‘Operation Leave Major Roads and Streets’.

Mr. Isaac who spoke in an interview on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, also blamed the non-compliance on the state government’s failure to enforce the ban.

He added that tricycle operators who ply internal roads face multiple ticketing by local communities thereby forcing them to return to the major roads.

Mr Isaac further appealed to the government not to enforce a total ban on tricycle operations as it would affect the livelihood of the riders. He urged the government to rather regulate the activities of tricycle operators.
