Period sex can get some women pregnant and it's common with women who have shorter menstrual cycle lengths.

This is the position of Public Health Expert, Dr. Chioma Nwakanma-Akanno who was speaking on Nigeria Info's Hard Facts.

According to her, "if a woman has a cycle length of say 21, 22 or just the shorter part of it, they are more likely to ovulate earlier during their cycle."

She explained that for such women, “their ovulation is coming earlier than those who have a later or longer cycle length."

Speaking further, Dr. Chioma Nwakanma-Akanno also revealed that "when sex occurs, the sperm cell can live in the woman for up to 3 to 5 days."

Thus, "if she has period sex maybe on day 5, remember ovulation is meant to start say on day 9, so by this maths, the sperm cell just waits for a willing egg to come out and fertilize."

She noted that contrary to popular belief, menstrual periods are one of the most unsafe periods.
