The question of taking legal action against offenders sparked a lively debate among callers on a recent episode of Nigeria Info’s Sunny Side.
The debate which ensued from Denise’s questions reflected the considerations Nigerians face when deciding whether to pursue legal action. It raised important questions about access to justice, the effectiveness of the court system, and the evolving role of social media in reputation management. The conversation had callers expressing differing views on how to handle being publicly maligned or having their rights trampled upon.
Henry argued that legal action is necessary, particularly for those unfamiliar with the justice system. He highlighted the importance of raising awareness about legal options for everyday Nigerians.
“If somebody tries to slander me, I’ll take legal action,” he said.
Lawson presented a contrasting perspective. He argued that celebrities should leverage the speed and reach of social media to counter public attacks, rather than getting bogged down in lengthy lawsuits.
“When you are a celebrity, people will say all kinds of things, all sorts of things. You don't need to go to the court, honestly, because you are popular now and so eyes are on you. All you need to do is, I mean in today's world of social media, you just go and refute it,” he said.
