With only a few days left before the expiration of a 30-day memorandum of understanding signed between the Organised Labour and the Federal Government, the Rivers State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Foster Onyefuru says most of the agreements are yet to be implemented.
Mr. Onyefuru who made the disclosure on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, appealed to Nigerians to remain patient saying Labour is still consulting and monitoring the implementation process of the agreement and would decide its next action if the MOU is not fully implemented after the 30-day ultimatum.
The Organised Labour, consisting of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC had suspended its planned indefinite strike in October 2023 for 30 days after a last-minute negotiation move by the federal government.
Minimum wage adjustment, fixing of the nation’s refinery, suspension of VAT on diesel, and provision of high-capacity CNG buses for mass transit, were among the issues discussed in the negotiation.
Speaking on the implementation process so far, Mr. Onyefuru expressed concerns about a lack of trust in the government's ability to carry out the MOU within the 30-day deadline, attributing this to past promises that were not kept.
According to him, the federal government has not involved Labour in any committee related to the implementation and has shown no willingness to do so.
Mr. Onyefuru also said the planned visit between the government and labour to the nation's refineries to ascertain its rehabilitation status has not happened.
