Bread, a major staple food in Nigeria may soon become a luxury food.

This is because the Association of Master Bakers & Caterers Of Nigeria is warming up for a strike from July 13th.

The Chairman of the Lagos state chapter of Master Bakers and Caterers Association,  Alhaji Omotunde Raji, revealed that the planned strike is due to the steady rise in the price of baking materials, which he says is making the bread business less lucrative.

He said the organisation had met with the federal government to express their worries but was each time told, "we would get back to you."

Alhaji Raji added that the organisation is seeking a waiver in import charges placed on wheat and the easy accessibility of forex "for the millers so that they can use it to buy wheat."

He reiterated that the organisation is left with no choice but to embark on a strike if the federal government fails to come to its members' aid.

Recall that another bakers’ association, the Supreme Bakers Association of Nigeria (SBAN), some weeks ago dismissed the threat of a strike, saying it’s a farce and no baker has plans to embark on a nationwide strike.
