The police have arrested two suspects allegedly responsible for computer-related fraud, identity theft, cryptocurrency fraud, and obtaining money by pretense.
The two, Odia Theophilus (24) and Ebo Junior Success (25), reportedly run an international online romance syndicate, assuming other people’s identities, and promising romantic relationships to their victims.
The Police Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, says the force received a report from the police in South Korea indicting the suspects of defrauding a Korean national, Baek Seong-hee - of 259,637,941 Korean Won (KRW) worth of cryptocurrency, equivalent to about N91 million.
They pretended to be a member of the US Armed Forces stationed in Yemen and used the cover of a romantic relationship to defraud the victim via Kakaotalk, a mobile messaging application.
Investigations by the Police National Cybercrime Centre led to the arrest of Theophilus and Success in Benin City, Edo State.
