What could have been a bloody weekend in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was averted when a heavy-duty truck crushed four vehicles along the Abuja-Keffi highway.

Many commuters were hospitalized but there was no death.

The accident occurred Sunday morning, close to the Karu Bridge, around the Nyanya area of the ever-busy Abuja–Keffi highway, resulting in heavy traffic.

Officers of the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC), and the police responded quickly to take the wounded to the Asokoro General Hospital and control traffic.

The Sector Commander of the FRSC, Samuel Ochi confirmed that the accident wasn’t fatal.

"The Unit Commander of FRSC and some of our personnel were at the scene of the crash. Actually, our truck is on its way to remove the wreck on the road but nobody died.

"They will clear the road. They have diverted traffic from the main road to the parking lane. FRSC ambulance has evacuated the injured persons to Asokoro General Hospital, Abuja for treatment."

The Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Monitoring, Inspection, and Enforcement, Ikharo Attah however said the administration was uncomfortable with recent occurrences on the road.

"You will recall that the FCT Minister, Mallam Muhammad Bello has spoken to the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to ensure the speedy completion of the road.

"And see after the road was completed, the speed by drivers on the road is worrisome and the rate of accidents involving trailers is getting very disturbing.

"If you observed on Saturday, July 2, just 24 hours before, we had a multiple-car accident involving a truck and a Sharon vehicle and now this Sunday morning we are experiencing this disturbing one again.

"We thank God no life was lost," Mr. Attah said.

The minister's aide called on truck drivers to put their vehicles in order and ensure they stop and park if they notice any mechanical faults.

Mr. Attah also enjoined truck drivers to always move slowly while descending from Abacha Barracks to Kugbo, down to Karu and Nyanya.

He insisted that all the trucks plying the ever-busy Abuja-Nyanya-Keffi Expressway must be in excellent condition.
