BRT driver, Andrew Nice Ominikoron has denied any involvement in the rape and murder of his passenger, Bamise Ayanwola.
A homicide police officer, Sunday Ihende testified at the Lagos State High Court in Tafawa Balewa Square that Nice Ominikoron made the denial in his confessional statement to the police.
The officer had appeared as a prosecution witness in the murder and rape trial of Ominikoron.
Ihende said he came in contact with the suspect on 7 March and that he made an oral confession because he was illiterate.
He told the court that Ominikoron said he didn’t know when the other passengers on his BRT dragged Bamise off the bus.
He however told the court that the suspect confessed to raping one Maryjane Odezulu.
The trial judge, Justice Sherifat Sonaike adjourned the matter to 31 October for a trial within trial.
The trial is for both the prosecution and defendant to prove if the confessional statement to the police was taken voluntarily or under duress.
Andrew Nice Ominicoron is facing a five-count charge including the murder of his passenger, 22-year-old Oluwabamise Ayonwola, who went missing on 26 February after boarding a bus he was driving.
He is also accused of raping and sexually assaulting two other women.
His trial has faced setbacks due to the absence of the lead defense counsel and his team.
The team has been absent in court at least six times.
